From the first moment we stepped inside we knew that we had landed in a special place, the beautiful hotel Majapahit, Surabaya. What a grandeur when you look around the large hall, excellently furnished, with wood accents, beautiful sofas and armchairs and special paintings that take you back in time. A smooth check-in with indeed only a small suitcase, and no one behind the counter wondered where the rest of our luggage was. Unfortunately, it was left behind in Singapore and arrived two days later. The room was as expected, spacious, clean, with a balcony overlooking the beautiful North Garden, where we were also able to experience some parties up close. Breakfast is a mix of Asian and European at hotel Majapahit and is served buffet style in the Indigo Restaurant, it is beautiful. The operation and service are special, sometimes a bit subdued, but always correct. Some dishes could have been a little warmer, if a lid is left open it cools down quickly, but it didn't bother us, we took the time for our breakfast, talking to each other and looking out the window at the busy traffic. Except on Sundays when the vibrant Tunjungan road is closed from 6am to 9am to all traffic and pedestrians, cyclists and children have free rein, we were there twice early in the morning and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mr. Kahar Salamun, the general manager, was present every morning and checked with various guests what their feelings and ideas were, an excellent way to keep in touch with what was going on, including with the staff. He surprised us on our 6th anniversary of our marriage with a small present. On the menu we missed a good portion of sate ayam, but we got that elsewhere.

Whoever has any sense for the impact of history on our current world will love this hotel. It is beautiful, well led, and also a living reminder of the complex shadow of the "long 19th Century" (including of its dubious features like colonialism). It was also the location of one of the most famous incidents (the "flag incident") on Indonesia's path to independency, so you will literally have a comfortable room in the middle of historical reminders. Its tranquil and lush gardens surrounded by the majestic hotel wings - and the occasional flying fox gliding through the vast open hotel corridors at night - have immense beauty. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there, also thanks to the very friendly personnel. Several nights before I had a room in another high-class hotel down the same street on the 20th floor, but the noise from Surabaya's busy streets there was considerable, whereas in the Majapahit it was comfortably quiet at night. I hope that this amazing hotel and historical monument will be kept as well as it is right now for a long future, and I will happily stay there again next time in Surabaya.

This is a unique hotel. I like old style properties, but this is the best - beautiful decor and rooms from a bygone era. The staff are fantastic - including the GM who is extremely approachable and pleasant. The food in the restaurant, for Indonesia, is pricey, but also fantastic. The bar is a great palce for a weekend drink - except Sundays it is closed. Its a great location. We stayed before, and we walked down into town, to the Surabaya Heros monument and museum, to Soekarnos House, and back to the hotel - all in a long but unrushed morning. The opposite direction a short walk is the submarine museum and the Dutch admin centre. Nearby is a large mall - so shopping options galore, and loads of eating options from seafood stalls, to decent restaurants. Art deco old world hotel with all mods. Its our go to in Surabaya nowadays.

Don't think about a visit here as a stay in a hotel, this is like travelling back into history. This is a stunningly beautiful hotel where the rich and famous have stayed and dined. There's lush internal courtyards, packed with flowers and trees, fountains and places to sit. The architecture is larhgely the same as when it was built apart from an Art Deco entrance. Rooms are large, cool, with stone baths, balconies overlooking the courtyard and planty of wood and brass. The bar does great cockails and the breakfast buffet, even for a vegan like me, was exceptional. If you love old movies, this place makes you feel like a film.star. Yes, loved it.

Heritage and location near to the old town with history. Also inside the hotel you can find many historical facts / pictures. Walking around gives you a feeling of the old Dutch colonial days in Surabaya. The rooms are classic and give that special heritage feeling. Nearby many nice places to eat / have a coffee. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. We had afternoon tea which was delicious. The tea could have been better, a bit plain (not made with fresh tea leaves, which you would have expected from a quality hotel like this and nearby tea plantations).
